To Grip or not to Grip?

Canon's DSLR camera range (with the exception of the 1D series) have an optional battery grip accessory. This device attaches to the bottom of the camera and has the following benefits:
  • Provides space for an extra battery which increases battery life.
  • Provides an additional shutter, exposure lock and other buttons which means that you can shoot vertical (portrait) without having to awkwardly wrap your hand over the top of the camera.
  • Makes the camera easier to hold, especially when a large lens is attached.

Canon grips come with an AA battery magazine. I’ve never used it. But the theory is that if you run out of juice and you left your battery charger at home, then you should be able to get some AA batteries form the corner store and keep shooting.

I personally think battery grips are great. I’ve used them on the Canon 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D and now on the 7D. Canon cameras have pretty good battery life already, but if you’re using a lens with IS (Image Stabilisation) the gyro can chew through more power when used frequently. Extra battery life will come in handy if you like to chimp a lot too.

The advantage of being able to comfortably shoot vertically (portrait) cannot be understated. This is a lifesaver when doing long shoots. Trying to hold a heavy camera (body, lens, flash) for long periods of time is hard enough without having to shoot with your arm bashing your forehead. Conferences, weddings and event photography in general is when the battery grip makes life a lot easier.

If you only shoot occasionally and generally do not need to hold your camera for long periods of time, then I would consider investing your money in other equipment. For example, the same amount of money could easily get you a nifty-fifty (Canon 50mm 1.8), a good quality lens filter to protect your glass and reduce flaring, or maybe even some lighting accessories.
